Popular Royal Caribbean Captain Announces Retirement


Fans of Royal Caribbean International are likely familar with Captain Johnny Faevelen


He has sailed for over 50 years and the last couple of decades has served as captain of some of Royal Caribbean's most popular ships. Because of his personality, tenure, and service on some of the top ships in the fleet, he has become well known by loyal guests of the company.


In a Facebook post, Faevelen has announced his retirement from Royal Caribbean. "50 years has passed, and it's time to say goodbye to Royal Caribbean Cruise Line," Faevelen said, "It is with mixed feelings I have handed in my resignation."


Captaining the world's largest and newest cruise ships like Harmony of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, and more, Captain Johnny stuck in the minds of every passenger that sailed with him.


"Good Morning! Good Morning! Good Morning! This is Captain Johnny speaking from the bridge!" the Captain would say as he welcome passengers to a new destination.


Captain Johnny, as he was affectionately known, was frequently see around the ship riding his scooter, Segway, or vehicle of choice. His Captain's Corner event was always popular among guests.


The retirement of Captain Johnny is truly the end of an era. He was on staff and began his career in cruising in 1975 and worked on some of Royal Caribbean's inaugural ships, including working on Song of Norway as an Ordinary Seaman.



His final decade with Royal Caribbean has seen him helm Oasis-Class vessels Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, and Symphony of the Seas.


Faevelen has recently become popular on social media, posting frequently on TikTok.


"I have been in the thinking box for the last months, 😵‍💫 and come to the conclusion that after 50 amazing years working for such a fantastic company, it’s time to start a new career;🏆" Faevelen said in the Facebook post. "As of January 26.2025 I will start...a new 'job'."


He said he plans on being 100% present for his family beginning at the end of his tenure with Royal Caribbean.


Faevelen was away from ships for an extended period of time recently as he underwent treatment for Melanoma, a journey he documented on social media. He received a good prognosis and returned to Captain Symphony of the Seas this year.


Captain Johnny has brough joy to so many during his tenure with Royal Caribbean and he will certainly be missed.


He was the captain on my first-ever cruise and little did I know, the first captain I sailed with would be the best captain. I'm thankful for all the joy he has brought me and my family over the years and wish him well in retirement.
