The soon-to-be world's largest cruise ship is on the move for the first time in her young life. Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas left the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland to begin sea trials.
According to a tweet by Royal Caribbean Public Relations, the trials will last multiple days and test several of the ships critical systems including engines, hull, life boats, and more. Such trials are standard with new build cruise ships as the shipyard makes sure that all the critical infrastructure of the vessel is sound before completing buildout and handing the ship over to the cruise line.
Once sea trials are completed, the vessel will return to the shipyard to finish construction on its extraneous features like water slides, pools, décor, etc.
Icon of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship in the world when it launches, weighing in at 250,800 gross tons and 365 meters long. That's nearly 65,000 gross tons larger and three meters longer than the current world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas.
Icon of the Seas will set sail in January of 2024 from the Port of Miami with itineraries to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.
