GALVESTON, TX (CRUISENREVIEW) - An incident where a barge struck a bridge connecting Galveston with Pelican Island in the busy port area should not delay or impact cruise traffic.
On Wednesday, May 15, an oil barge struck the Pelican Island Bridge, causing a partial collapse and spilling oil into the water near the incident site.
Officials say the oil spill is contained and only a small amount of oil spilled into the water.
While a portion of the bridge did collapse, the bridge did not structurally fail and could potentially re-open again soon.
The incident took place west of the deepwater shipping channel that large barges and cruise ships utilize, this has been unaffected at this time and no impact is anticipated on larger ship traffic or cruise ships.
Additionally, the Pelican Island Bridge is not a main source of traffic flow to or from Galveston Cruise Ports.
CruiseNReview has many clients that sail from the port of Galveston and we are following this story and will alert them individually should their cruise be impacted. At this time, we have little concern that this will have any affect on cruises departing or arriving to Galveston.
